The Airport of the Future Advanced, sustainable and passenger-centric.

The airport of the future is envisioned to be a technologically advanced, sustainable, and passenger-centric hub that offers a seamless travel experience. We reviewed the Internet, asked some of the experts and came up with some characteristics that could well define the airport of the future:

  • Sustainable Design: The airport of the future will prioritize sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and renewable energy sources to minimize its environmental impact. Check out our podcast with ARUP on circularity to understand how this future is already happening now.
  • Smart Technology: Advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and biometrics will be integrated throughout the airport to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. Facial recognition and biometric scanning will expedite security checks and boarding procedures, reducing waiting times. Check out our podcast with CrowdScan to understand how technology is already supporting passenger flows at airports.
  • Seamless Check-In and Security: Passengers will experience a seamless and touchless check-in process, enabling them to complete various formalities through mobile apps or self-service kiosks. Advanced security screening systems will be quicker and more accurate, ensuring safety without causing unnecessary delays.
  • Personalized Services: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants will be available throughout the airport to provide passengers with real-time information, personalized recommendations, and assistance for any queries or concerns.
  • Sustainable Ground Transportation: The airport will promote green transportation options, such as electric shuttles and vehicle-sharing services, to reduce carbon emissions from ground operations
  • Biophilic Design: The airport’s architecture will incorporate elements of biophilic design, connecting travellers with nature to create a more relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. Indoor gardens, natural light, and green spaces may be incorporated. Changi already shows how this “future” looks like now
  • Interactive Digital Signage: Interactive digital signage and wayfinding systems will help passengers navigate the airport efficiently and access real-time flight information, boarding gates, and amenities.
  • Virtual Reality Lounges: Passengers may have access to virtual reality lounges or entertainment zones, providing immersive experiences and entertainment options during layovers.
  • Augmented Reality for Navigation: Augmented reality (AR) applications on smartphones or AR glasses will assist passengers in navigating large airports and finding their way to their gates or facilities. AR is already actively used by several aviation providers to support airport staff whenever problems arise with any of their systems or hardware.
  • Multi-Modal Connectivity: The airport will facilitate easy transfers between different modes of transportation, such as seamless connections to trains, buses, and other public transit systems. Look at what is already now happening with airports linking up to railways companies to create a real intermodal travel experience.
  • Health and Wellness Facilities: The airport of the future may feature health and wellness facilities, including exercise areas, relaxation zones, and healthy food options to promote passenger well-being.
  • Sustainable Retail and Dining: Retail and dining options will focus on sustainability, offering eco-friendly products and locally sourced, organic, and healthier food choices.
  • Advanced Baggage Handling: Advanced baggage handling systems will ensure faster and more efficient luggage handling, reducing the chances of lost or delayed baggage. Some airports have already started collecting luggage at home so you don’t need to worry about your luggage during parts of your travel.

Overall, the airport of the future will prioritize sustainability, technology integration, and passenger convenience, offering a seamless, efficient, and enjoyable travel experience for all travellers.
